In recent weeks, many MV students have probably gone to view the newest popular film at the local AMC Theaters; Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film has managed to become the most popular and successful movie of 2021 by a large margin, it even doubled the profit of the second most successful movie of 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was a movie also released by Marvel Studios.
What makes this movie so popular that in 2021, it outranked every other movie released in the box office that year in a matter of a week? What set the film up to smash records even in our COVID era?
Well, the superhero movie stars the famous Tom Holland as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in his third movie with Marvel Studios. He has actually appeared in six Marvel movies, but three of those films do not feature him as the main role.
With the film’s application of the multiverse, the directors managed to fit Spider-Man villains from older Spider-Man movies into the plot such as Green Goblin and Doctor Otto Octavius. The villain cameos come from the three original Spider-Man movies in 2002, 2004, and 2007 and the 2 Amazing Spider-Man movies in 2012 and 2014.
Spider-Man: No Way Home also featured the stars of those films, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Mans, though they didn’t play as important of a role in the plot as the villains did.
Besides the featured appearances of past actors, the movie had a captivating story where Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was attempting, along with his friends, to change the villains of the past. The story included time for hardship, death of the main characters’ guardian Aunt May, and struggle for signs of progress. Even with the hard emotional connection the film attempts to make, Spider-Man: No Way Home had many comedic moments and little bits of nostalgic callbacks for longtime fans such as the appearance of other Spider-Man characters and humorous moments that relate back to their past movie appearance.
The film ended on a questioning but optimistic note leaving the audience wanting to see what’s next to come for Peter Parker in the future of Marvel films.
All of these features made for lots of surprises and was an extremely enjoyable film. Many returned to theaters for a second viewing. What critics on rottontomatoes.com say is that the film met the high expectations and was an instant classic.
Besides the greatness of the film itself, other reasons why Spider-Man: No way Home did so well. Such as the incredible job marketing and advertising of the movie. There were many people crazing over the film before it even reached the theaters.
Commercials, first one appearing on August 23rd, 2021, included enough information to intrigue the audience but not spoil the movie and the film reached theaters at a perfect time right around when students leave their classes for winter break so they can watch the film instead of doing homework.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was also in fact co-produced by two of the biggest film producers in the business: Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. Feige is the President of Marvel Studios and Pascal is the chairperson for Sony Pictures Entertainment. This happened because of Sony’s rights to the Spider-Man character.
The thrilling and satisfying film was a great addition to many lives in the latest winter break and gave many a great excuse to get out and watch an amazing film in person during the holiday season. I’m sure many won’t forget the success and joy brought by Spider-Man: No Way Home.
