Lil’ Yachty takes heavy inspiration from Pink Floyd on his fifth studio album Let’s Start Here. Seeing that Yachty had released a new album, I was not expecting him to take influence from the 70s rock band Pink Floyd. I believe it should win Album of the Year at the Grammys.
The intro to the record “the BLACK seminole” sets the tone for the record. Produced by Justin Raisen, Lil Yachty, Patrick Wimberly, SADPONY, and Jacob Portrait, you can hear the influence that The Dark Side of The Moon had, with sizable tones of psychedelic rock.
In the third track on the record “running out of time” featuring Justine Skye, Yachty is trying to convince his lover to stay, because of all the secrets he has told them while trying to enjoy their last moments together as significant others.
The fifth track on the record, Yachty throws everyone off guard, with the spoken word track “:(failure:(” Yachty explores topics of happiness, wealth, and failure. Yachty tries to convey his opinion that failure is not a dead-end, but a point where you went wrong, and need to go a different way. With a background track produced by Mac DeMarco and Alex G. The 11th track on the record, “paint THE sky” is the song with the most dreamy production on the record. Produced by Anthony Lopez, Justin Raisen, Lil Yachty, Patrick Wimberly, and SADPONY. They sample The Weeknd’s hit song “Save Your Tears.” It is arguably one of the more emotional tracks that Yachty has released, Yachty explores themes of wanting to die for his lover.
Yachty finishes the album with the outro track “REACH THE SUNSHINE.” featuring Daniel Caeser. Interpolated by “Pyramid Songs” by Radiohead, the duo dives into self-exploratory themes on a smooth synth-filled track.
Let’s Start Here is definitely my pick to win Album of the Year at the Grammys this year. The heavy influence from Pink Floyd definitely made this record more enjoyable to listen to. Lil Yachty definitely surprised fans with the new style he was going for with this record.
