It’s officially spooky season here at MV! What traditions and plans do students and teachers have for this year’s Halloween?
Many celebrate Halloween, but some do not. MV has provided insight on what’s the scoop for Halloween 2023.
“I do celebrate Halloween because it’s a lot of fun and I love scary movies and the costumes,” said Julia Jee.
Dressing up, watching scary movies, and trick-or-treating are common themes seen throughout the years on this holiday.
Olivia Burns said, “I personally don’t like scary movies, they gross me out more than scare me.”
Halloween does carry a more horrifying side to it, and a great example of that would be “The Haunting at Horse Creek.”
MV’s very own Mrs. Hulbert and her family run “The Haunting at Horse Creek,” which won the Illinois Haunt of the Year in 2022.
According to Mrs. Hulbert, a little less than half of the students here at MV attend the event every year.
Dressing up in scary or silly costumes and going trick-or-treating is a common halloween custom. Although, once one reaches a certain age, they might be considered “too old.”
From the point of view of Jee, one is never too old to continue trick-or-treating. If someone puts effort into a costume then even adults should be able to go trick-or-treating since it’s such a fun Halloween tradition.
However, others disagree and say there is in fact an age limit.
“Once you turn 18. I highly recommend getting dressed up and going trick-or-treating a few more times before you all grow up!” said Michelle Frisch, MV’s Preschool teacher.
Numerous people apart of MV still dress up and even come to school in costume. Student Council may even have some ideas brewing for the holiday.
Student Council member Burns said she doesn’t know for sure what’s on the agenda, but hopes students will be able to dress up because it would be really fun!
According to Student Council co-advisor Dr. Jamey VanZandt, Student Council plans to sponsor a Costume Day on October 31 – Halloween.
“Costumes must be appropriate, no fake weapons and no masks,” said Dr. VanZandt.
Students and staff are not the only ones excited about Halloween. Some of the preschoolers already know what they want to be this year!
Preschooler Hudson says, “I want to be a Monster Truck driver!”
“I want to be Penelope from the movie ‘Wreck it Ralph’!” states Kenleigh from the preschool.
Various people also partake in watching scary movies, either new or classic.
Teacher Mrs. Frisch said, “I always rewatch my favorite horror movies this time of year. So it will be Halloween 1 and 2 and all of the Friday the 13th movies.”
Friday the 13th is indeed this October and is the perfect time to celebrate Halloween. Maybe even time to put up the seasonal decorations!
“Our upstairs is usually just simple fall decorations but our basement usually has plenty of Halloween decorations and serial killers from scary movies down there.” added Jee.
MV is excited for this year’s costumes, activities, and candy. So start telling scary stories in the dark or on Vernois News, either is best!
