On July 15, 2017 a game called Fortnite Save the World was released. Developed by the studio Epic Games. It was at first, a player vs environment game. You would do missions and quests while battling zombies with crafted weapons. I personally haven’t played much of this mode in my lifetime.
Around this time in the video game world, battle royals were taking the gaming industry world over, with games like PUBG and H1Z1. Epic Games decided to take on the challenge of trying a battle royal, on September 26, 2017. I don’t have many memories of playing Fortnite at this time, except for one time when I didn’t know what was happening. I was hiding in a cave by Salty Springs and died in the storm. I was so confused about what was happening.
After being out for about 4 months, the total player count for Fortnite reached over one million concurrent players. Everybody was playing it, and rightfully so. The game was new, really fun, and you could play with all of your friends. I have way too many stories of staying up all night playing, the game was addicting.
Epic Games would come out with a new season every three months. The seasons would include things like map changes, new weapons, new vehicles, new battle pass and skins. My favorite season of Fortnite was Chapter 1 Season 5. It had the most fun weapons, and a new mode was added called playgrounds. Where you and your friends could drop into the actual map and fight each other. I have countless memories playing playgrounds and always doing build battles at Tilted Towers by the clock tower.
The game would continue to update, and then on October 15, 2019. Epic games released one of the biggest updates in gaming history, with Fortnite Chapter 2. The in-game event included a big mechanical robot and a godzilla-like lizard. They had a battle on the map, destroying the whole thing. Then everyones screen just turned black. And a big black hole appeard. Everyone was confused, this lasted for a day and a half. When everyone got back into the game. Chapter 2 was released, with a brand new map, new transportation, fishing, and swimming. This was some of the most fun gaming I have ever had. I think I played more in chapter 2 then I did in chapter 1.
But then Epic Games, doing what they do best, started to ruin the game. They would add way too much to the game. Making it not feel how the old Fortnite felt. They did this for almost 2 years. Then randomly one day, Epic Games announced that the OG Fortnite was coming back. After I heard this news, I was so excited to relieve the memories that I once had. Even though it only lasted for a month, that one month was some of the most fun I have had in such a long time. The nostalgia hit every single spot that was in my brain. I hope that Epic Games can learn that sometimes less is more.
