Mount Vernon Township High School has always been a place for Ram spirit and long running tradition, from showing off Ram pride during pep rallies to late night basketball games in Changnon Gymnasium. In particular, one of the most loved traditions at MV is the Khaos Kage, a section where the students sit and watch the game with their friends and to cheer on the Rams.
The Khaos Kage has had many changes over the years. Originally called the Chaos Corner, it held some of the loudest students. The Chaos Corner was located in the southeast corner of the gym behind the Rams bench near the locker room in the original 1936 Changnon Gymnasium.
Then in the early to mid-2000s the Corner was turned into the Kage. The band and student body was placed onto the stage with a net closing off the stage from the court. Finally the latest change for the Kage would come in 2016-17, when the MV opened its new campus, which led to a new Khaos Kage at the south end of the new Changnon Gymnasium right behind the basket, going all the way to the top under the scoreboard.
The Khaos Kage holds so many memories for many Ram fans, including me. When I was younger I always remember going to old Changnon Gymnasium, sitting in the rafters and seeing the students go crazy all night long, from cheering so loud they couldn’t hear themselves think, to dressing up to funny themes such as western, frat and the famous Blackout game, and screaming at the opposing players ( I always loved that).
I really wanted to be part of that… so much that I would beg my parents to take me to as many basketball games as possible. Even when the school changed campuses, it still had the crazy feeling from the old Kage, just not as compacted (plus the new gym isn’t as hot as old Changnon).
Now that I am a junior at MV, I can now say I have gotten a good look at what it’s like in the Kage, from the themes like cowboy night, ESPN Gameday, and Blackout Night, the screaming of chants (which usually ruffles some parents´ feathers), and the highly-anticipated Rams vs Orphans game. All told, I am extremely excited for this years´ Kage because I know it is gonna be crazy and loud. #GORAMS!
