January 7th marked the 81st annual Golden Globes award ceremony, hosted in Beverly Hills.
Host, Joe Koy, made waves with his questionable punch lines, leaving many contestants feeling more degraded than awarded.
One of the most infamous punch lines of the night was aimed at Taylor Swift.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” Koy questioned. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
The following camera of Swift is unamused.
One TikTok creator even claimed she “came up with 10 jokes about Taylor Swift that were better than ‘what’s-his-face’ at the Golden Globes,” during her 10-minute shower.
The joke that delivered the fatal blow to Koy’s monologue goes like this: “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies.”
“The whole point of Barbie was how women are treated differently compared to men, and (Koy) proved the whole point that men just don’t see it,” argued Amelia Lamont, ‘25.
But how would this controversial monologue be viewed differently if it was delivered by a woman?
The overall consensus to this question seems to be “She wouldn’t have made those jokes,” asserted Lamont as well as both Hannah Lowery, ‘24, and Kylie Poole, ‘24.
Those responsible for broadcasting the ceremony did their best to keep the mood light by covering up awkward silences with laugh tracks.
It was still obvious though that many celebrities in the crowd were off-put by the jokes.
The lack of enthusiasm from the crowd quickly turned Koy defensive.
“I just got this gig ten days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Shut up!” remarked Koy.
“I was like ‘Oh, great; so now you’re insulting your audience?’” added Olivia Baumhoegger ‘24.
“You’re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these and those are the ones you’re laughing at!” Koy went on.
The response to the monologue left Koy in the social crossfire, and it’s safe to say Koy won’t be back for next year’s ceremony.
As for Koy’s career: “Ultimately there was no career to be ruined because I’d never heard of him before.” remarked Lowery.
