On December 13, 2023, “We Are the Champions” rang throughout MV as the Unified eSports team was crowned champions of the Central Region.
MV’s Unified eSports team competed against other schools in Rocket League, a game similar to soccer, but the player is a car instead of a soccer player.
“Our Team currently only competes in Rocket League because that is one of the only games currently offered for Special Olympics Unified teams to compete in,” said Coach Daniel Morrison.
Many of our athletes love this game because it is a fun and fast-paced experience similar to soccer, but you use rocket-powered cars to both drive and fly around an arena while trying to score on the opponent’s goal,” continued Coach Morrison.
The Special Olympics Unified eSports Central Region comprises 24 teams ranging from Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, and New York.
The Unified eSports Team entered the playoffs with a record of 3-5 and a rank of 18 out of 24.
“The disappointing regular season record from the Fall was unfortunately due (mostly) to technical difficulties which resulted in our team having to forfeit matches. These issues were frustrating but we have taken the time since then to fully ensure that all future matches will be played and completed as scheduled,” stated Coach Morrison.
Despite their standings, the Rams battled hard, bringing MV a championship title.
“As for our comeback in the playoffs, the simple truth is that we have some incredibly talented Rocket League players on our team, and when given the chance to play it is rare that they come up short,” added Coach Morrison.
The Playoff’s Championship game was against Horsehead High School from New York; the Rams defeated the Blue Raiders with a best-out-of-seven score of 4-2.
As we enter the second half of the school year, the Unified eSports team is beginning to start preparations for their Spring Rocket League season where they are looking to defend their Central Region Championship Title.
“We are extremely excited to keep the train rolling as practices are currently happening and our first match of the Spring is scheduled for February 8th at 4:00 pm. Everyone is welcome!” mentioned Coach Morrison.
