After playing for the Green Bay Packers for nearly twenty years, Rodgers decided it was time to move on from the Packers and joined the New York Jets in 2023. Rodgers’ first game with the Jets resulted in an Achilles tear and caused Rodgers to miss the remainder of the 2023 season.
Just a year prior, the Packers star receiver Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Most believe this had a big role in Rodgers’ decision to move on from Green Bay and finish his career out elsewhere. Adams and Rodgers were a sight to see when they were on the field together. Over seven years, Davante Adams racked up 622 receptions for 7,590 receiving yards and 69 touchdown receptions with Rodgers at quarterback. These two were obviously on the same page every time they stepped on the field. The two were so good together that they racked up several records on the way including, the most touchdowns for a Green Bay QB & WR duo with 69, Rodgers became the quickest quarterback to rack up 400 touchdown passes, and Adams holds the Packers record for most receptions, yards gained, and receiving touchdowns in a season. There are a couple of reasons as to why Adams decided to move on from Green Bay, firstly Adams felt the Packers’ initial offer was low, and that they were making him play out his final year of his deal without a new contract. The Packers’ final offer was $17 million per year, while DeAndre Hopkins, another top receiver, received an extension for $27.35 million per year. (Bleacher Report)
Another reason for Adams’s departure was the uncertain future for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. After spending time making his decision, Adams ultimately decided to move on from the Packers and join his college quarterback, Derek Carr in Las Vegas. Everyone had high hopes for the Raiders, they had chemistry at the quarterback and wide receiver position and had a good young defense. The Raiders did not live up to the expectation and finished second to last in the AFC West with a 6-11 record. Despite their troubles as a team, Adams still had a phenomenal season finishing with 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and 14 touchdowns. Despite having good numbers Adams showed frustration with the Raiders. His second season with the Las Vegas Raiders was where everything crumbled apart, with Derek Carr leaving this left an opening at the quarterback position that later went on to be Jimmy Garaopolo. Despite finishing with a better record than the year before, the Raiders still fell under the 500 mark finishing 8-9 and missing the playoffs once again. Adams had 103 receptions for 1,144 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. (ESPN)
Adams came into the 2024 season frustrated with the Raiders and even requested a trade just a quarter into the 2024 season. After a week of speculation around the two possibly reuniting or Adams going elsewhere, Adams was traded to the New York Jets and appeared on a Zoom call with Aaron Rodgers on an ESPN TV show called The Pat McAfee Show just a short time after the trade was announced. The Jets have a good, young, and strong team, and with this addition, the Jets are hoping this is what puts them at the top of their division and makes them playoff contenders.
