In today’s world, having a solid internet connection can be crucial. That said, having a phone at school is very important for some. Most kids have after-school activities, not all students are old enough to drive, and not all students get the privilege of driving, so they have to rely on someone else to pick them up. If practice time changes, It can be a struggle on its own to contact someone during the day with parents working jobs. Now, with the Wi-Fi gone, it’s almost impossible to contact someone.
Of course, students can always go to the office to use a phone, but what if your guardian is on the phone at work and can’t get off the phone and they miss your call? Most practice changes are made last minute, usually due to some type of miscommunication, weather, etc. This makes it almost impossible to get a hold of your ride to tell them what’s going on.
There are so many different clubs at MV that require you to use your phone at times. For example, I am in Vernois News, and for me to be able to receive cover photos for my stories I have to have access to my phone and the internet to receive photos of teachers to add to the story. Once again this has proven to be near impossible at times without a steady Wi-Fi connection.
Now I understand the goal of taking the Wi-Fi because there are times when students abuse the privilege, but we’ve gone several years with everybody having Wi-Fi, so why make a change now? It’s a pure inconvenience, to say the least. We’ve been allowed to be on our phones in the lunchroom since my freshman year, so it almost seems like it’s a select few who don’t want the students to have the Wi-Fi and it’s just hard to understand. Personally, any time I get on my phone at school it’s to communicate with someone about something important such as a job, or text my mom about school work, and the list goes on.
Students live lives outside of school and have other things they have to worry about while at school. I’d understand if this was a middle school, but some of us are nearly grown and have things going on. I think the school should create a student Wi-Fi for students in clubs and sports or just let us reconnect to the Wi-Fi we’ve spent three and a half years on.
