They tell you ‘there’s a place for everyone at MVTHS’ but figuring out where exactly you fit in can be nerve-racking and difficult; whether you are a freshman that is just starting their high school career or a junior whose senior year is creeping up on them with the realization that you have zero items to list on your college application besides attending school every day.
This may be the predicament you currently face, or you could be facing other challenges with not quite knowing where to take part in your school. That’s where MV Student Council comes in – there is quite literally a place for everyone in this massive organization filled to the brim with your peers.
It is the perfect place to find your voice and make your mark. “It is the best way to get involved in school,” says Addi Tinsley, ‘25, who holds the office of Senior Class President, and has been involved in Student Council all four years of her high school career.
There are 3 main reasons why a student may not wish to be involved in school activities, and if these sound like you, keep reading to see how MV Student Council has solved those problems.
- Time Constraints: not having enough time to do schoolwork alongside other activities
- Lack of Interest: not feeling passionate about any clubs/organizations offered at MV
- Lack of Benefit: thinking that there is not benefit to them personally by being involved
- Time Constraints
If the seemingly endless dull meetings are what deter you from joining any extracurricular clubs/organizations, MV Student Council has solved that problem. Thursday mornings are bursting with hustle and bustle for MV Student Council members, as quick 20-minute meetings are held weekly at 7:40 a.m. “We meet every week and talk about and talk about new business and future volunteer opportunities,” Clover Tinsley, ‘26, states. There are so many opportunities to be involved within the school every week.
MV Student Council plans immense amounts of activities every year, including Homecoming and Homecoming Week, Orange and Black Week, Fall Drive in LEDSC Workshop, Spring Fling Week, Christmas Spirit Week, and does the Pledge of Allegiance every morning over the intercom. There are so many ways to be intertwined into the activities hosted at MV through Student Council, meaning that if you can’t be there for every event or meeting, there are always many more to come.
- Lack of Interest
If you feel like you aren’t interested in anything extracurriculars do, MV Student Council has so many options of activities to be involved in. Student Council plans so many things across the school, but there are also smaller and more intimate meetings/events for just members of MV Student Council, for instance, Renaissance Night, where members of Student Council get together to socialize, eat, and plan upcoming spirit weeks.
“I think the importance of being a part of Student Council is that you can help contribute to school events all while learning how to be a good leader and example for others,” says Lily Houle, ‘26, who is the junior class secretary.
- Lack of Benefit
If the benefits you receive from extracurriculars are simply not enough for all the time and dedication spent towards an extracurricular, the experiences you gain from MV Student Council will last you a lifetime, assisting you in many things you do in the future.
“While some may overlook the benefits of Student Council, my experience was invaluable, it taught me the essence of leadership and introduced me to lifelong friendships that I continue to enrich even 12 years after graduation. I often reminisce about our trips to State Conference, LEDSC workshops, and other creative ideas that we shared. Today, as a member of Rotary, I carry forward the spirit of service above self which I first learned in Student Council, proving that the lessons we take from high school can echo throughout our lives,,” says Megan Jackson-Schmidt, who was Student Body President her senior year of 2013.
If you still feel unsure about whether or not you should join MV Student Council, just remember that you only get one chance to leave a legacy at MVTHS, and for some, Student Council may just be the beginning of a leadership journey that you will continue to follow for the rest of your life.
