Mrs. Ashlee Adams recently began the season as MV’s new women’s tennis head coach. Adams’s first few weeks on the court have been filled with preparations for the season, teamwork, and lessons learned.
When the tennis coach position opened up, Mrs. Adams knew she would be a great fit.
“I love that tennis is a lifetime sport, one you can do forever. The opportunity of MVTHS needing a coach came up and after watching my best friend’s daughter take up the sport last year, I decided I really enjoyed it again. I played in high school (Carmi) and college (McKendree University) and it seemed like a good time to get back into it,” stated Mrs. Ashlee Adams.
With the addition of the new coach, players have already noticed a positive impact.
“The season is going pretty well. Coach Adams is an amazing addition to the program and has done a great job with the team,” stated Clover Tinsley, ‘26.
The team is still adjusting to new dynamics and teammates.
It’s going “Pretty good. We are just getting started and getting used to playing with our new teammates still,” said Abbie Russell ‘27.
Players are learning more about their individual strengths and preferences. Some prefer singles, while others like to work with a partner and capitalize on teamwork. In tennis, one can play singles, a match between two people with one person on each side of the net, or doubles, a game between two teams with two players on each side of the net.
Some players prefer doubles. Alex Prost, ‘29, stated, “For me, I enjoy doubles more because I get to play the net, which is really fun to me,” while other players prefer singles. “Definitely singles,” said Callyssa Gilbert, ‘28.
Teamwork is important when it comes to tennis, especially during doubles matches.
“Teamwork is a big deal for me and a big part of my philosophy. Teamwork on the court is playing doubles together and having great communication, and helping each other. Teamwork is also supporting your teammates while they’re playing and you’re not,” stated Adams.
Like any sport, tennis comes with its own set of physical and mental challenges. Long rallies, multiple matches, and the pressure of competition test the athletes’ endurance and mental toughness.
“The most challenging part is how long it can last. You have to have the endurance and strong mentality,” stated Tinsley.
During these tough matches, Mrs. Adams continues to uplift her team and help their spirit. “I try to set the tone of being calm and not giving up. I continually encourage the girls as they play,” stated Adams.
The Lady Rams have already competed against several teams, including Vandalia, Highland, Marion, Carmi, Fairfield, Benton, Herrin, and they also played in the Marion Tournament. The season is still in its early stages, and the team will continue to build on these experiences as they move forward into the season.
