For 2025-2026, MV administrators and the School Improvement Committee unveiled the first mission statement for MV’s new campus.
The statement reads: “The mission is to provide challenging educational and social experiences that will create in all students lifelong learning and responsible citizenship in a diverse and changing world.”
The statement’s purpose is to unite the MV district under a common goal, and its presence in classrooms reflects that purpose.
The School Improvement Committee, a group of key teachers, administrators, and staff members, developed the statement.
Creating the mission statement took time, effort, and collaboration within the committee.
Ms. Crystal Hunt-Michels, a committee member, explained that the desire for change and direction motivated members to create the mission statement.
Ms. Michels added that a new school requires a constant “tying up of loose ends,” so when the opportunity arose, the committee addressed topics that had been previously set aside.
Many in the MV community agreed on the need for renewal.
Mr. Robert Grider, Assistant Principal, said the new mission statement was created because “we moved to a new building and had an old mission statement; we needed a revamp.”
The reaction to the mission statement around MV was largely positive among students and teachers alike.
“I would not change anything,” Mr. Trace Turner said.
Sawyer York ‘27 responded similarly, adding, “I agree with it, I can’t think of anything negative.”
Several agreed on the statement’s utility, explaining that it serves to unify MV.
Mr. Turner stated, “Mission statements are incredibly important for a school… If the school does not have a clear vision, it will scatter.”
For those who might not appreciate the value of the statement, Ms. Michels recommends viewing it as a “reset.”
Ms. Michels explains that the monotony of day-to-day life can make people forget the purpose of their actions.
As for the next steps, the MV district works to walk more in accordance with the mission statement each day.
Ultimately, the mission statement symbolizes a new beginning and provides a shared goal for MV’s future.
