To entertain and show support for the Rams, MV Marching Rams are performing a brand new show, “Aweosme Mix Vol. 1” for the halftime shows this season at Ken Hunt Stadium
“I really enjoy playing music in a group with other people and I wanted to share that experience with my students in band,” said Mr. David Mateyka
Mr. Mateyka, Band Director, for the most part chooses the music the band plays. This time however, The seniors got to choose this year’s “Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” with music from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
“We are playing ‘Mr. Blue Sky,’ ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, and ‘Hooked on a Feeling,” stated Drum Major Victoria Bocock,’23, “My favorite one to play is ‘Hooked on a Feeling’, I like the Ooga Chaka at the beginning,” Bocock added.
Bocock serves as a Drum Major in band and has been interested with band since she was little. She also plays clarinet and is learning to play saxophone.
“When I was a little girl, I went to parades and stood in awe of how cool I thought the marching band was,” said Bocock,”How you could hear them coming around the block and how awesome they looked up close,”.
Speaking of which, this year, the band is debuting all new marching uniforms.
“I couldn’t be happier with the new uniforms, I think they look amazing and perfectly fit the culture and community of MV perfectly” responded Mr. Mateyka.
“I LOVE our new uniforms, It’s like a little girl’s dream coming true because of how cool we look so cool,” said Bocock,’23, “But it comes with a new responsibility, we have to show everyone that we earned our uniforms,” Bocok added.
To get their new uniforms, the band held multiple fundraisers and collaberted with the school for direct funding. In total, the uniforms cost $58,000, according to Mr. Mateyka.
“I love them, They’re a lot more comfortable and nicer looking than our old ones” added Snare drummer Jaden Nichols, ‘23.
Nichols plays snare drum and is the section leader for the drumline. He also plays the marimba for concert band.
“I’ve loved music and always wanted to be in the band, especially the marching band” commented Nichols,’23. “I’ve been doing band all four years of my time here at MV, and I have always loved it.”
Along with the Halftime Show, The Band will perform their first live concert of the year on October 26.
“I extend an invitation to anybody and everybody to come to our first concert” said Mr. Matyka.
On September 22, at MV’s Ken Hunt Stadium, The band performed at the Ram’s Pink Out football game for breast cancer awareness.
The band is very proud and confident in their halftime performance, and they hope you come to see them!
