Bungee jumping at Bloukraans Bridge along the Garden Route in South Africa is an unforgettable experience few have the opportunity to experience. Standing there on the platform at the edge of the bridge looking down at the 216m (236.22yd) drop ahead, to be lifted back up on the ocean side of the valley is truly breathtaking and I was lucky enough to have experienced it.
It all began when many many years ago my mom showed me the videos of her going bungee jumping; we always said once I’m old enough I would go bungeeing with my mom, so when we went back to South Africa in the summer of 2024 for the first time in four years we decided to follow through on that promise. On the Eastern Cape side of the bridge me and my mom bought tickets for the bungee jump, this would be my mom’s third time here, from there we waited for a little over an hour where we enjoyed the view, looking at the valley, the river below, and the ocean.
Once the previous group finished our group was called over by one of the employees, where we walked the path down to the underside of the base of the bridge, where we would zipline across to below the center of the bridge. We stood there anxiously waiting while people were jumping and being pulled back up.
My mom jumped first, and she actually jumped backwards with the bungee cords tied to the front of her harness which creates a lot more of a free falling effect. We waited some more and finally it was my turn, they called me over, I stood there, I took a deep breath and got pushed off before I gained the courage to jump, as I was going down I thought I was going to die, unsurprisingly I did not. I dangled at the bottom then one of the employees was sent down, he clipped me into his harness, and I was winched back up.
This is easily one of the best experiences of my life, if I get the opportunity I would absolutely do it again. I am so happy I finally did it after talking about it with my mom for so long. Sometimes facing your fears does pay off.
