For many people, their faith has an “off-switch.” On Sunday, our switch is on, and by Monday morning, we are back to doing life again according to the world’s standards. Although Sunday is the day we attend church and praise the Lord, it isn’t meant to be a national holiday; we only visit once a week.
Thanksgiving, for example, is a holiday we celebrate for one day, then we pack up the decorations and wait till next year. But faith isn’t meant to work that way. We shouldn’t brush the dust off our Bible on Sunday morning only to place it back on the shelf, letting it collect dust again throughout the week.
Our Bible is our training ground, where we learn to live for God. After all, as individuals, we may be the only Bible a non-believer ever reads. That’s why, as believers in Christ, we must get up daily and choose the Lord and His ways, so that we can show others just how powerful He is and how quickly one’s life can change when they walk beside Him.
It’s very easy to forget about the sermon on Sunday and focus on the new gossip about someone else’s life, the new romance novel, the latest TikTok trend, or the next season of one’s favorite show. We must show our faith through our actions and our words. James 3:9-10 states, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”
I, myself, struggle with falling into worldly desires. I catch myself gossiping, saying ungodly things, and my words not matching my actions. But after all, no one’s walk with God is perfect. I believe that as long as you are working every day towards your relationship with the Lord and admitting your mistakes and striving to do better, you are doing the right thing.
Sometimes it’s easy to look back on the past and think about times when not much progress has been made or poor decisions that have occurred; when one is filled with the Holy Spirit and is fully convinced of His presence, they will know that their past is forgiven. Focusing on the rearview mirror is exactly what the devil wants so that followers aren’t focusing on the Lord and their walk with Him.
So, no matter where you are right now, keep pressing forward with faith, trusting that God is with you and guiding you every step of the way.
