Early this year, Conan Gray announced the release of his latest album, Wishbone, surprising shocked fans from all over the globe.
With the release of Wishbone, he started a short tour, only traveling outside the U.S. to perform in Mexico.
This was until he was performing his popular song Astronomy when a projection appeared on the rocks that surrounded the stage, reading, ‘Wishbone: World Tour.’
As of now, Gray has announced over forty different shows in varying locations. But how come Wishbone is getting a different treatment than that of Kid Krow or Superache?
“I think the music compares in the feeling of the albums. Wishbone feels more like himself. I think Found Heaven was more of a project outside of his personality.” DeMington Dunham, ‘29, stated.
Conan Gray’s music is often described as deep, emotional, and particularly relatable, but does seeing this live really impact how much emotion Gray provokes?
“Seeing Conan Gray live was such a different experience from just listening to him in my headphones in such a drastic way. When I saw Conan live, it felt like I was watching the song come to life, and I felt every lyric deeper than I ever had. Getting to witness Conan perform songs that I love to listen to with many emotions made me feel so happy and sad at the same time; it actually brought me to tears!” explained Marveuna Burnett, ‘26.
Conan Gray’s new album focuses more on getting over a bad heartbreak. This can be an especially hard lesson for young adults and teens to learn and, most importantly, relate to.
Gray has a wide outreach and connection with his fans across the world.
“Yes, the album displays heartbreak. It helps you figure out who you are. It feels relatable because I know a lot of people my age who are going through that. His music makes me feel like it’s okay to be emotional. It shows that being vulnerable isn’t a bad thing,” said Dunum.
Emma Hall, ‘27, expressed, “I feel I relate to them emotionally, but not all of them. Some of the songs I know relate to my friends really well, which makes me feel closer to the songs. Conan’s music made me notice that other people do relate to you and go through some of the things you do, even if you don’t realize that they do.”
Gray has risen in the charts these past few months, likely why he planned one of his biggest tours yet.
What lyrics make this album special enough to warrant such significant development?
“It’s my world and it’s my time, I’ll waste it how I might like” from My World, it just reminds me that my life is my decision and I can do what I choose in my life, not what other people say I have to do,” Hall explained.
It has been almost seven years since Gray’s debut album, Sunset Season. How has his music developed into the worldwide phenomenon it is today?
“I think as an artist, Conan has grown lyrically and given us a different perspective on the same situation, but his music grows with us,” explained Burnett. “I feel that the difference in Superache and Wishbone is that they show two different stages of grief, while Superache is more emotionally jagged, and Wishbone has matured and accepted fate.”
What words can be used to describe the atmosphere or feeling that is evoked when listening to Wishbone?
“I would say ‘Honest’, because every song feels like he’s telling a story with true emotion,” Dunum explained.
“Encouraging,” said Burnett, “I chose this word to describe Wishbone because this album gave me a sense of hope and a new lens for situations that I needed help with, and I was so happy and honored to see him perform songs from this album live!”
“Heartfelt, I feel like he really puts his heart into his music, but something about this album just felt like he put even more of himself into it,” Hall said.
All in all, where should Conan Gray go after having such a sensation of events transpire in this past month?
“I hope to see some new music with some features from other artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan. I wish him happiness in his move forward with music,” said Dunum.
“I hope that Conan takes his time to figure out a new vibe, hopefully for another album, which I would really love! I also hope to see some collaborations,” Burnett said.
